Novogrudok is the third city in the so-called silver ring of the Belorussian cities. Novogrudok is one of the three capitals of the Middle Ages in Belarus (Nesvizh-Turov-Novogrudok).
One of the highest point of Belarus is situated in Novogrudok. In the early Middle Ages Novogrudok was the capital of Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the residence of King Mindovg. It is impossible to find out where the Great King was buried. However, there is a sepulchral stone of Mindovg in Novogrudok. According to one version it is believed that the remains of King are in Novogrudok land.
On the castle hill there were left the ruins of impregnable castle in Novogrudok. Before the use of gunpowder in wars the castle did not submit any of the attackers. He was captured only by Swedes. But they used guns against the defender in the castle.
Novogrudok is famous for the great Polish and Belarusian poet Adam Mickiewicz he was born here. The museum of the poet is working in Novogrudok, it is possible to listen to music and poetry of his epoch. The museum is constantly being updated together with the Polish side.
Knight festival is held in Novogrudok since 2000 like in many ancient Belarussian cities. Huge tents are placed below the Castle Hill directly. The culmination of the festival is always a mock capture of the castle with a lot of infantry soldiers. According to witnesses the battle has no difference from the real one. Both sides fight in the battle ardently and fearlessly.
